Periodontal Treatment Berlin

Protection against premature tooth loss

Periodontitis, often referred to as periodontal disease, is one of the most common infectious diseases in adults and is therefore considered a widespread condition. It is a bacterial inflammation of the supporting structures of the teeth. If left untreated, it can lead to tooth loss in advanced stages.

One of the most serious aspects of periodontitis is its slow and often unnoticed progression. In many cases, the disease is only diagnosed once it has already reached an advanced stage. For this reason, periodontitis is one of the leading causes of premature tooth loss.

As your dentist in Berlin, we specialize in periodontology and the effective treatment of periodontal disease. Prevention is particularly important to us. Regular prophylaxis appointments play a key role in preventing the development of periodontitis and in maintaining healthy teeth in the long term.

Causes of periodontitis

The development of periodontitis is complex and influenced by various risk factors. The most common factors include:

  • Poor oral hygiene with plaque buildup
  • Diabetes
  • Smoking
  • Genetic predisposition
  • Chronic illnesses
  • Hormonal changes
  • Stress
  • Poor nutrition

To reduce the risk of periodontitis, these factors should be minimized wherever possible and regular preventive dental visits should be maintained. If periodontitis does occur, we determine the underlying causes through detailed dental examinations while also taking general health factors into account. Identifying the cause precisely is essential for creating an individualized and effective treatment plan.

Progression and symptoms of periodontitis

  • Early stage: Periodontitis often begins as gingivitis, which is inflammation of the gums. Typical signs include redness, swelling, and bleeding gums. At this stage, the condition is still easy to treat. However, due to mild symptoms, it is often underestimated.
  • Progression: If gingivitis is not treated, the inflammation can spread to the bone. Gum pockets may form, allowing bacteria to accumulate more easily. Symptoms at this stage include increased gum bleeding, gum recession, persistent bad breath, and in some cases, loosening of the teeth.
  • Advanced stage: As the disease progresses, the gum pockets deepen, bacterial load increases, gum recession becomes more pronounced, and tooth stability continues to decrease.
  • Tooth loss: If periodontitis remains untreated, it can ultimately result in tooth loss.

Since the progression and severity of periodontitis vary from person to person, it is important to consult your dentist in Berlin at the first signs of symptoms, such as bleeding gums when brushing. Regular checkups are also essential, as periodontitis can be detected early using the periodontal screening index and treated accordingly.

Periodontal treatment procedure

At the beginning of treatment, we measure the depth of the gum pockets to assess the severity of the disease. This is followed by professional teeth cleaning to remove harmful bacteria, with particular focus on cleaning below the gum line.

Depending on the stage of periodontitis, further treatment may be necessary. In more advanced cases, this can include surgical procedures such as gum pocket reduction or bone regeneration.

After active treatment, we recommend supportive periodontal therapy. This follow up care is typically carried out one to four times per year, depending on the severity of the condition. It includes regular examinations and professional teeth cleaning to monitor gum health and intervene early if necessary.

All periodontal treatments at our practice are carried out according to the latest scientific standards. Our primary goal is to protect your natural teeth and achieve long-lasting treatment success.
