Functional Diagnostics & CMD Therapy Berlin

Craniomandibular dysfunction

The masticatory system consists of the teeth, the upper and lower jaw, the masticatory muscles, and both temporomandibular joints. Its movements are smooth and finely coordinated through complex control mechanisms and are closely integrated into the interaction of the entire musculoskeletal system. The most obvious functions of the masticatory system include chewing, speaking, smiling, and facial expressions. Less noticeable but equally important functions include swallowing, tactile perception, stress regulation, and many others.

When disturbances occur within this finely tuned interaction, the condition is referred to as craniomandibular dysfunction, also known as CMD.

CMD symptoms in Berlin

For many people, CMD manifests through nighttime teeth grinding or unconscious, persistent clenching of the teeth. Over time, these functional disturbances lead to tension and shortening of the jaw closing muscles, while the jaw opening muscles weaken. An increasing number of people suffer from the consequences of imbalanced muscle tension or muscle weakness in the masticatory system.

When the body’s natural compensatory mechanisms are no longer able to balance these stresses, symptoms such as restricted jaw movement, pain, and noticeable cracking or grinding noises in the jaw joints can occur. In addition, metabolic waste products are no longer adequately removed from the affected tissues, which further contributes to pain.

In advanced stages, CMD can lead to increased tooth wear, tooth inflammation, and degenerative changes in the cartilage and bone structures of the temporomandibular joints.

Other possible symptoms include neck tension, one-sided headaches, jaw stiffness, fatigue when chewing, dizziness, and tinnitus. These symptoms often occur in combination. Targeted treatment is essential to allow the jaw to relax, relieve pain, and prevent long term damage to the teeth and jaw joints. For this reason, we begin with a comprehensive functional diagnostic assessment.

The treatment of craniomandibular dysfunction requires a high level of expertise and often an interdisciplinary approach. Possible causes and contributing factors include:

  • Orthopedic issues and poor posture
  • Malocclusion or bite misalignment
  • Misalignment of the pelvis or spine
  • Trauma or microtrauma caused by injuries or accidents
  • Parafunctional habits such as nail biting
  • Speech related functional issues
  • Hormonal influences
  • Physical factors such as cold or humidity
  • Digestive and metabolic disorders
  • Stress, grief, or emotional strain
  • Other psychological factors

These factors can occur individually or in various combinations.

Interdisciplinary treatment options

Effective treatment of functional disorders often involves collaboration between different medical and therapeutic disciplines. Depending on the individual situation, orthopedists, physiotherapists, psychotherapists, alternative practitioners, and dentists may work together to develop a tailored treatment concept.

In holistic CMD therapy, your dentist in Berlin focuses on restoring balance across three key functional areas.

1) Structure/anatomy – This includes reducing muscular tension, strengthening weakened muscles, correcting tooth or jaw misalignments, relieving forced bite positions, and addressing functional changes in the jaw joints.

2) Psychological factors – Stress, anxiety, grief, and other emotional influences are addressed through appropriate methods such as relaxation techniques or hypnosis. If required, interdisciplinary psychotherapeutic support may be integrated into the treatment plan.

3) Nutrition and digestion – A healthy digestive system is a fundamental basis for overall physical balance. We also offer nutritional counseling, particularly in cases of food intolerances.

These three functional areas are closely interconnected. Our goal is to restore balance within the affected systems and achieve sustainable improvement in both acute and chronic functional disorders of the masticatory system.
